How to Maintain Weight Loss, Frisco Style!

How to Maintain Weight Loss, Frisco Style!

get-fit-frisco

Valoree Bowen
After going through a divorce in 2011, I realized I had put my health on the back burner. I was a nurse, but not setting a good example of a healthy lifestyle. I tried many diets, and I lost and then regained weight, but I finally broke through.
Starting a lifelong journey to become healthier though practical, realistic changes, over the next 2 to 3 years, I lost and maintained a loss of 50 pounds.
After you’ve worked so hard to achieve a goal like this, maintenance becomes your number 1 priority, and fortunately, there are some fun things you can do right here in Frisco to help.
Basic lifestyle changes such as:
  • Stop drinking sodas to decrease sugar intake
  • Walking the dog around the neighborhood to increase activity
  • Keeping healthier snacks available (raw, cut fruits and vegetables)
  • Utilizing quality vitamin supplementation, and
  • Eating in more and out less.
I’m proud of the accomplishment, but along the way I discovered that complacency is a slippery slope. When I met my husband, we married quickly and were off traveling for the better part of the last 1 1/2 years. The travel disrupted my lifestyle changes and I didn’t care until I realized I was UP 20 pounds!
Wait, WHAT?!?!  I knew it was time to regroup and take it up a notch. Good thing the changes I made became habits that stuck.
We moved to Frisco with a new restaurants around every corner, a small backyard for the dogs (so no need for apartment walks), and plenty of eating for two.  So, I started analyzing what had changed and what I could do in Frisco to get back on track.
What works:
  1. Find someone who will support you in your weight loss journey.Learn from them and use what works for you. There is no one-size-fits-all! Watch out for those who try to sell you on the idea that ‘there is only ONE way to do this.’  I have found there are many ways to do a lot of things!  What are YOU going to be consistent with and make into a healthy habit?  You’re the one that has to live with daily regime and be the one who follows through. You will find that anyone who has lost a considerable amount of weight, and kept it off, understands this.
  2. Groupons for Frisco workout facilities are numerous.  Try different types of exercise that fit what you like:  yogaonmainst.com,  planetfitness.com ($10 month),  friscofun.org, are great places to start.  When I had my grandsons staying with us for a few months, we visited the Frisco Athletic Center which included 2 hours per day free childcare with as many visits per month as you wanted, plus the free water park!  If you’re going to increase your activity, keep it simple and fun.
  3. Frisco also has a number of ways to get outdoors and stay active.  We have numerous trails, run/walk 5k charity events that happen with regularity, and a variety of fitness-oriented businesses and clubs. Try something new like yogabarre methodcrossfitbiking, or Hike It Baby for all you moms with small kids.
  4. Visit healthy eateries but start eating at home more often.  I had no idea there were such places as modmarket.comjuicerheroes.com,pure-plates.com, or iconmeals.com (based here in Frisco).  And for those who want to learn how to cook healthier at home, we have our local Frisco Farmers Market, May through October every Saturday morning, a lot of fresh food vendors with tons of healthy choices. You can also find holistic doctors and practitioners in the North Texas Natural Awakeningsmagazine. Tiepermanhealth.com has this magazine in her office in downtown Frisco along with many other places in the area or you can read it online.
  5. Monitor your progress & make adjustments quickly. Journaling was a big part of becoming aware of what I was putting in my mouth. It is easy to loose track of what you’re eating while watching TV or while snacking from the nurses break room.  Jot down what you eat throughout the day.  I find the MyFitnessPal app works great.  Also, if you have a bad day, don’t wait until Monday to “restart” your healthy routine. Start right away.  Over time, this one simple decision adds up.  For those who may have an food addiction, celebraterecovery.com is a great resource. We may think of alcoholism or drugs as the only addictions but food is easily accessible and is frequently used as reward which makes food addiction very real.
No matter what, don’t give up on yourself.  You may have a set back or two, so just get back on track without beating yourself up. Be intentional on what you want to improve and do something about it.  If you find it difficult, reach out to those that have already accomplished what you want to. Do your own due diligence and make choices that fit you best.
Allow yourself the things that provide you joy, in moderation (for example that miniSnickers bar or a cupcake).  If you attempt to cut out all “bad foods” or exercise every day, you set yourself up for failure. As you make better choices, over time you will reap the benefits.
I use to think the word T-I-M-E was a bad word. I  didn’t like it as I’m a bit impulsive and like instant gratification, but allow time to be your friend and it will be worth it for you.  Yes, my husband and I still travel and eat out on occasion when we’re here at home, the only caveat is that we adjust other choices to fit nutrition, activity, and fun into the schedule.

Do you have a JOY list?

Do you have a JOY list?

joy

Valoree Bowen
The definition of joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. I have came across the idea of a “JOY List” several times in my past and asked myself “what is life if we do not experience joy”?
When I was learning to change my eating habits, I would go to my list of healthy alternatives, choosing something from that list rather than fall back on my old, less healthy habits. But my list needed to include things I enjoy doing because I REALLY like Twinkies. When I was stretched for money, I would pull out the FREE list. When I had some money to spare, I would go to the “this costs me some money but I’m worth it list”. And the more I have used a Joy List, the more I’ve come to realize that JOY = SUCCESS.
YOU are responsible for creating your own joy. There’s no need to wait on someone else to provide it. Keep your own happiness and wellbeing in your own hands, where it belongs.
I suggest adding 1-3 things to the list each week. Sometimes I find myself in a down mood or feeling negative & I go to my joy list. The more you are joyful, optimistic, hopeful etc, the more people, resources and opportunities will be attracted to you.
My coach Tiffany Peterson with The Light House Principles has been a great resource for me in my home based business. I am an RN (Registered Nurse, but I also see myself as a Relationship Networker or Relationship Nurturer), and whether I am involved in community volunteering with Frisco Women’s League, networking at the North Texas Moms in Business group, or attending church at Hope Fellowship, my goal is to build relationships and be of value to others. Check out Tiffany’s website, blog & videos for more ideas that have inspired me.
Frisco is full of JOY, let’s take a look at some ideas. Your list may look different. The point is to find those things that give YOU joy, and do more of those things.
  • Coloring Barnes & Noble has tons of coloring ideas for adults.
  • Send a note of encouragement/thanks/hello to someone.
  • Relax on a Frisco patio with a friend
  • Call a friend. Make connection calls, reconnect & be genuine.
  • Read a magazine.
  • Watch a funny show/video clip. Laughter always lifts the spirits.
  • Take the dog for a walk at the Frisco dog park .
  • Facetime a special someone you don’t get to see often (for me that’s my grandson).
  • Window shop.
  • Worship/praise.
  • Find a way to save money.
  • Do something you’ve known about in Frisco but have never tried (we have a good list)
  • Exercise (SO many options..find what you like & have fun..this raises mood)
  • Listen to music/videos.
  • Journal your feelings.
  • Massage/Facial/Pedicure/Manicure.
  • Give to someone (time, attention, item, money).
  • Go to a movie YOU want to see at Cinemark Frisco Square.
  • Walk at the park to your favorite tunes (Frisco Commons/Hope Park).
  • Take a stroll down Frisco Main Street & visit the shops.
  • Look into Acupuncture/Aromatherapy/other holistic therapies.
  • Out to eat at a new place
  • Shooting at the range.
  • Bookstore browsing.
  • Lay out by the pool.
  • People watching.
  • Go for a haircut/color (try something new).
  • Foot massage
  • Make time at least 1-3 times per week to do something for yourself. It doesn’t have to be costly, but it does need to bring you joy. Make your own list now.
Make it a great day & enJOY!

DIVA Women Outdoors Worldwide

DIVA Women Outdoors Worldwide

Valoree Bowen
I was looking for other women who resembled what I wanted to become…strong, independent, confident, genuine, and living with purpose. I wasn’t sure exactly what that looked like for me, but I knew I needed to surround myself with healthy women.
After a little searching, I found DIVA Women Outdoor  Worldwide (WOW) and decided to attend my first pistol shooting league. WOW was right! I had a blast, met some amazing women, and fell in love with “all things guns.” ðŸ˜‰
Upon getting involved, I f0und a community of like-minded individuals who show the power of having a support system when you need it most.

What is DIVA WOW?

The mission of DIVA – Women Outdoors Worldwide is to help, teach, and guide women worldwide in a friendly, non-threatening , supportive environment by introducing them to shooting sports and a variety of outdoor, and traditionally male, activities.
Since 1999, DIVA WOW has introduced thousands of women to the outdoors through 3-gun/shotgun/handgun clinics, leagues (including archery), hunts, trade shows, adventures to the State Fair of Texas, Canton (which is a yearly DIVA road trip), charity events, and community outreach.
Speaking of archery, I just did an archery clinic this past weekend where we learned the basics… how to shoot the different styles of bows provided by Cinnamon Creek Ranch while competing with each other. Now, this chick needs a bit of practice, but how FUN it was to experiment in a non-threatening environment with cool weaponry!
With regard to gun, DIVA WOW provides access to first-class classes & certifications to get your CHL (Concealed Handgun License), plus NRA certifications and basic trainings. I love the spirit of sisterhood we’ve enjoyed, including our first-timers, while enjoying the great outdoors and all that it has to offer.
The sponsors for the DIVA WOW – 501 (C) (4) organization are quite generous. The raffles, give-aways, and SHOPPING involved are phenomenal! After all, who wouldn’t want a cheetah print wrapped AR-15 in their collection?

Membership in DIVA WOW

DIVA WOW is a unique, non-profit, social, all volunteer organization. Sponsor and benefactor contributions finance the organization. There are several types of  membership available:
  • Regular annual
  • Student
  • Junior
  • Life-time

DIVA WOW In Frisco

In the Frisco area, there is a handgun league that meets about 3 times per year at the Frisco Gun Club, and of course, they’re always looking to expand with events that are of interest in the community.
In the past, I have participated in the DFW area, but there are DIVA Liasons all over the world. Founder Judy Rhodes is right there in the trenches and gives so much of herself to the mission of this great organization.
List of many of the clinics from the past couple of years:
  • Archery
  • Fly Fishing
  • Spin Casting
  • Advanced Handgun
  • Tactical Pistol
  • Shotgun Skills: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
  • Sporting Clays
  • Rifle Marksmanship
  • Long Range Rifle
  • Dog Days (hunting dogs that is)
  • Slingshot & Blowgun (I have both and THEY ARE FUN!)
  • Equestrian
  • Sailing
  • Social Outings:  Christmas light tour, Canton Weekend, DIVA road trip, State Fair of Texas, Waco’s Magnolia Market, etc.)
There are many aspects to staying healthy and DIVA WOW addresses several in one place. You can nurture your physical, mental, social, economical  & spiritual self in a wide variety of ways just by being involved with DIVA WOW. It’s a joy for me to connect with others, teach and train, learn from, and give back.
Check out DIVA WOW, and the BEST thing you can do is share it with your friends!

How to Get Better Sleep-Hacking the 5 Senses

How to Get Better Sleep – Hacking the 5 Senses

sleeping

In today’s world, people are under increasing stress, greater pressures, information overload, anxiety, and sleeplessness. As a nurse, I see the increase in use of caffeine and sugary drinks to keep awake, and sleeping pills to help shut down at night.
We all know that if you don’t get adequate sleep your body can’t function at optimal levels, but what CAN we do to get better sleep without masking the issue with short term fixes?
Let’s start by focusing on our senses…

SMELL

Did you know that smell may be the most influential sense? You can literally “sniff” your way to a better sleep!
Aromatherapy has gained popularity with the widespread use of essential oils to assist in a variety of ailments, insomnia being one of them. Diffusers & oils can be found at our local Bed, Bath & Beyond or Sprouts stores.
For a more personal touch, I recommend local distributors of do-TERRA or Young Living Essential Oils.  They are knowledgeable and passionate in the uses of their products. Here are a sample of scents and their therapeutic effects on sleep:
How to Get Better Sleep - Hacking the 5 SensesLavender: can be used to help curb anxiety, depression & rest. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the smell of lavender can decrease heart rate and blood pressure, putting you in a more relaxed state. Spritz on your pillow at night prior to bed or diffuse.
Orange: reduces anxiety while promoting a sense of well-being and calmness.
Peppermint: reduces cortisol levels (stress hormone) which affects weight loss, and reduces fatigue. It can also reduce chocolate cravings.
Studies show how exposure to different scents can protect long-term health and relieve stress, insomnia, and improve mood.

TASTE

Prior to hitting the hay, what you eat or drink can dramatically affect your sleep. Most of use can relate to the post-Thanksgiving nap after gorging from dinner. This occurs partly because of the amino acid Tryptophan found in turkey, eggs, chicken, fish & nuts. Carbohydrates make tryptophan more available to the brain (mashed potatoes, bread, pecan pie…) compounding your sleepiness.
It’s not a bad side effect if you want to sleep, but for those looking to lose weight, I wouldn’t recommend this on a daily basis!
chocolate-cookies-milkOn the other hand, spicy, fatty, or fried foods may upset the digestive tract which disturbs your sleep. Caffeine, sinus medications, and chocolate are can keep you wide awake well beyond bedtime. Decrease usage by mid-afternoon if possible. Some find alcohol as a relaxation aid, although you may find your quality of sleep is negatively affected.
Eating a lighter meal of lean protein before bedtime, or not eating at all, is a better choice. Natural insomnia aides such as Chamomile (anti-inflammatory, treats anxiety, insomnia & aids digestion), Melatonin (helps regulate sleep), & Lavender (fights insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, and depression) are all good alternatives to the rising prescription medication epidemic.
Maxx Synergy (full disclosure: my company) offers a product known as “Lights Off,” and when taken an hour before bedtime, helps calm, de-stress, and relax your core to help you get the deep and restorative sleep you need to function at your best. With 15 ingredients to allow your body to heal and detox, you’ll awaken with increased vitality but no groggy or sluggish feeling.
For those who want the instant gratification of something to help them get to sleep and stay asleep with long term positive health benefits, “Lights Off” is a great alternative. Other options for natural sleep aides can be found at the Frisco Family Health Market.

SIGHT

sheetsA great night’s sleep can also depend on the visual conditions in your bedroom environment.
Our body detects when the sun starts going down and the light in our environment diminishes. Melatonin levels begin to rise and our temperature drops. The result is less alertness and increased sleepiness.
Light and darkness affect the quality of our sleep. Even artificial light like TVs, tablets, smart phones, and porch lights matter.
How many of us stare into our smart phones just before trying to get to sleep? How about breaking open a physical book to “wind down” instead, and avoid electronics at least 15-30 minutes prior to bedtime.
Cover small lights, obtain light filtering window covers, and use eye masks to help diminish ambient light. For darkening shades or help blocking light form windows visit Gotcha Covered here in Frisco. Avoid turning on bright overhead lights when rising to use the restroom in the night, and use a smaller night light in the bathroom itself instead.
Reducing light exposure will help you get that 7-9 hours of sleep that’s recommended.

TOUCH

How well you sleep at night can also be affected by how you feel in your environment. The temperature recommended for best sleep is around 65 degrees. At night, your temperature tends to drop, being the lowest approximately 5am. If the room is too warm, this can inhibit your body’s drop and make for a restless night.
Each person is different, so experiment with what works best for you. Our own thermoregulation of temperature can cause sweating or shivering which will disturb sleep.
pillowsYour mattress, pillows, pajamas, and sheets can also affect sleep. It’s recommended to change out your  mattress about every 7 years. I know this seems a bit much, but for some it’s a must. We have numerous places in town where you can “try before you buy” that also have a money back guarantee. Mattress Firm North Friscooffers this option plus payment plans.
I cannot say enough about pillows because keeping your spine in alignment is the key. Consider replacing them when they feel lumpy or flat. In fact, I am still searching for my perfect pillow.
Proper sheets and pajamas can make sleeping a dream. Typically, a breathable cotton fabric is great so you don’t overheat. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 91% of Americans change their sheets at least every other week. Clean, fresh smelling sheets can make all the difference for a restful night. For those of you with pets (especially, the hairy ones) try Sticky Sheets, they are a life saver!

SOUND

When you work the night shift and have the lawn guys that come at 9am on Tuesday, sound is a big issue. Roadwork, dogs barking, alarms, a TV blaring from the other room, doors shutting… You name it, I’ve dealt with it.
While you sleep, your brain continues to process sound at a basic level. Sound can affect the different stages of sleep you are in without you even being aware of it. The types of sounds also make a difference. That’s why you may not wake to the routine noise of a spouse’s snores, but instantly arise when the baby cries across the house. People are more likely to wake when a sound is relevant or emotionally charged.
Going to sleep with the TV on can take a toll on your quality of sleep. The problem is that the sounds from the TV range in volume and tone disrupting your sleep subconsciously. White noise or a sound machine would be better. There are apps for your smartphone that put white noise right at your fingertips. Personally, we sleep with a fan going. The white noise plus circulating air help us take the plunge into deep slumber.
Take time to set your phone on “Do Not Disturb” so you don’t hear every ding and notification. Also, close the bedroom door and let others know when you plan to sleep.
Arrange yard work to an alternate day, place a sign on your front door, and put the yapping dogs in their space with blinds closed. Ear plugs are also a great option. I use my shooting range plugs, specially molded ear plugs, for comfort.

So, Stop Slapping the Snooze

Many of the things involving your senses are intentional steps that can be taken to increase your quality of sleep. We’ve all met people who say they slept 12 hours but still arose exhausted. Any of the things related to the senses could be the culprit, and most likely several of them.
Eliminating just one negative and replacing it with a positive can lead to a more comfortable, healthier sleep pattern over time. Your sleep won’t fix itself and prescription sleep medication need not be the only option.
It amazes me that when I was obese, I failed to consider nutrition, my own boundaries, or what my responsibilities were to getting better sleep. That special quick fix pill wasn’t out there. Research & do your own due diligence when it comes to your health and well being.
Drop by and like my business page to ask any questions about sleep and connect!
