Do you have a JOY list?

Do you have a JOY list?

joy

Valoree Bowen
The definition of joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. I have came across the idea of a “JOY List” several times in my past and asked myself “what is life if we do not experience joy”?
When I was learning to change my eating habits, I would go to my list of healthy alternatives, choosing something from that list rather than fall back on my old, less healthy habits. But my list needed to include things I enjoy doing because I REALLY like Twinkies. When I was stretched for money, I would pull out the FREE list. When I had some money to spare, I would go to the “this costs me some money but I’m worth it list”. And the more I have used a Joy List, the more I’ve come to realize that JOY = SUCCESS.
YOU are responsible for creating your own joy. There’s no need to wait on someone else to provide it. Keep your own happiness and wellbeing in your own hands, where it belongs.
I suggest adding 1-3 things to the list each week. Sometimes I find myself in a down mood or feeling negative & I go to my joy list. The more you are joyful, optimistic, hopeful etc, the more people, resources and opportunities will be attracted to you.
My coach Tiffany Peterson with The Light House Principles has been a great resource for me in my home based business. I am an RN (Registered Nurse, but I also see myself as a Relationship Networker or Relationship Nurturer), and whether I am involved in community volunteering with Frisco Women’s League, networking at the North Texas Moms in Business group, or attending church at Hope Fellowship, my goal is to build relationships and be of value to others. Check out Tiffany’s website, blog & videos for more ideas that have inspired me.
Frisco is full of JOY, let’s take a look at some ideas. Your list may look different. The point is to find those things that give YOU joy, and do more of those things.
  • Coloring Barnes & Noble has tons of coloring ideas for adults.
  • Send a note of encouragement/thanks/hello to someone.
  • Relax on a Frisco patio with a friend
  • Call a friend. Make connection calls, reconnect & be genuine.
  • Read a magazine.
  • Watch a funny show/video clip. Laughter always lifts the spirits.
  • Take the dog for a walk at the Frisco dog park .
  • Facetime a special someone you don’t get to see often (for me that’s my grandson).
  • Window shop.
  • Worship/praise.
  • Find a way to save money.
  • Do something you’ve known about in Frisco but have never tried (we have a good list)
  • Exercise (SO many options..find what you like & have fun..this raises mood)
  • Listen to music/videos.
  • Journal your feelings.
  • Massage/Facial/Pedicure/Manicure.
  • Give to someone (time, attention, item, money).
  • Go to a movie YOU want to see at Cinemark Frisco Square.
  • Walk at the park to your favorite tunes (Frisco Commons/Hope Park).
  • Take a stroll down Frisco Main Street & visit the shops.
  • Look into Acupuncture/Aromatherapy/other holistic therapies.
  • Out to eat at a new place
  • Shooting at the range.
  • Bookstore browsing.
  • Lay out by the pool.
  • People watching.
  • Go for a haircut/color (try something new).
  • Foot massage
  • Make time at least 1-3 times per week to do something for yourself. It doesn’t have to be costly, but it does need to bring you joy. Make your own list now.
Make it a great day & enJOY!

Valoree Bowen
I was looking for other women who resembled what I wanted to become…strong, independent, confident, genuine, and living with purpose. I wasn’t sure exactly what that looked like for me, but I knew I needed to surround myself with healthy women.
After a little searching, I found DIVA Women Outdoor  Worldwide (WOW) and decided to attend my first pistol shooting league. WOW was right! I had a blast, met some amazing women, and fell in love with “all things guns.” ðŸ˜‰
Upon getting involved, I f0und a community of like-minded individuals who show the power of having a support system when you need it most.

What is DIVA WOW?

The mission of DIVA – Women Outdoors Worldwide is to help, teach, and guide women worldwide in a friendly, non-threatening , supportive environment by introducing them to shooting sports and a variety of outdoor, and traditionally male, activities.
Since 1999, DIVA WOW has introduced thousands of women to the outdoors through 3-gun/shotgun/handgun clinics, leagues (including archery), hunts, trade shows, adventures to the State Fair of Texas, Canton (which is a yearly DIVA road trip), charity events, and community outreach.
Speaking of archery, I just did an archery clinic this past weekend where we learned the basics… how to shoot the different styles of bows provided by Cinnamon Creek Ranch while competing with each other. Now, this chick needs a bit of practice, but how FUN it was to experiment in a non-threatening environment with cool weaponry!
With regard to gun, DIVA WOW provides access to first-class classes & certifications to get your CHL (Concealed Handgun License), plus NRA certifications and basic trainings. I love the spirit of sisterhood we’ve enjoyed, including our first-timers, while enjoying the great outdoors and all that it has to offer.
The sponsors for the DIVA WOW – 501 (C) (4) organization are quite generous. The raffles, give-aways, and SHOPPING involved are phenomenal! After all, who wouldn’t want a cheetah print wrapped AR-15 in their collection?

Membership in DIVA WOW

DIVA WOW is a unique, non-profit, social, all volunteer organization. Sponsor and benefactor contributions finance the organization. There are several types of  membership available:
  • Regular annual
  • Student
  • Junior
  • Life-time

DIVA WOW In Frisco

In the Frisco area, there is a handgun league that meets about 3 times per year at the Frisco Gun Club, and of course, they’re always looking to expand with events that are of interest in the community.
In the past, I have participated in the DFW area, but there are DIVA Liasons all over the world. Founder Judy Rhodes is right there in the trenches and gives so much of herself to the mission of this great organization.
List of many of the clinics from the past couple of years:
  • Archery
  • Fly Fishing
  • Spin Casting
  • Advanced Handgun
  • Tactical Pistol
  • Shotgun Skills: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
  • Sporting Clays
  • Rifle Marksmanship
  • Long Range Rifle
  • Dog Days (hunting dogs that is)
  • Slingshot & Blowgun (I have both and THEY ARE FUN!)
  • Equestrian
  • Sailing
  • Social Outings:  Christmas light tour, Canton Weekend, DIVA road trip, State Fair of Texas, Waco’s Magnolia Market, etc.)
There are many aspects to staying healthy and DIVA WOW addresses several in one place. You can nurture your physical, mental, social, economical  & spiritual self in a wide variety of ways just by being involved with DIVA WOW. It’s a joy for me to connect with others, teach and train, learn from, and give back.
Check out DIVA WOW, and the BEST thing you can do is share it with your friends!

How to Get Better Sleep-Hacking the 5 Senses

How to Get Better Sleep – Hacking the 5 Senses

sleeping

In today’s world, people are under increasing stress, greater pressures, information overload, anxiety, and sleeplessness. As a nurse, I see the increase in use of caffeine and sugary drinks to keep awake, and sleeping pills to help shut down at night.
We all know that if you don’t get adequate sleep your body can’t function at optimal levels, but what CAN we do to get better sleep without masking the issue with short term fixes?
Let’s start by focusing on our senses…

SMELL

Did you know that smell may be the most influential sense? You can literally “sniff” your way to a better sleep!
Aromatherapy has gained popularity with the widespread use of essential oils to assist in a variety of ailments, insomnia being one of them. Diffusers & oils can be found at our local Bed, Bath & Beyond or Sprouts stores.
For a more personal touch, I recommend local distributors of do-TERRA or Young Living Essential Oils.  They are knowledgeable and passionate in the uses of their products. Here are a sample of scents and their therapeutic effects on sleep:
How to Get Better Sleep - Hacking the 5 SensesLavender: can be used to help curb anxiety, depression & rest. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the smell of lavender can decrease heart rate and blood pressure, putting you in a more relaxed state. Spritz on your pillow at night prior to bed or diffuse.
Orange: reduces anxiety while promoting a sense of well-being and calmness.
Peppermint: reduces cortisol levels (stress hormone) which affects weight loss, and reduces fatigue. It can also reduce chocolate cravings.
Studies show how exposure to different scents can protect long-term health and relieve stress, insomnia, and improve mood.

TASTE

Prior to hitting the hay, what you eat or drink can dramatically affect your sleep. Most of use can relate to the post-Thanksgiving nap after gorging from dinner. This occurs partly because of the amino acid Tryptophan found in turkey, eggs, chicken, fish & nuts. Carbohydrates make tryptophan more available to the brain (mashed potatoes, bread, pecan pie…) compounding your sleepiness.
It’s not a bad side effect if you want to sleep, but for those looking to lose weight, I wouldn’t recommend this on a daily basis!
chocolate-cookies-milkOn the other hand, spicy, fatty, or fried foods may upset the digestive tract which disturbs your sleep. Caffeine, sinus medications, and chocolate are can keep you wide awake well beyond bedtime. Decrease usage by mid-afternoon if possible. Some find alcohol as a relaxation aid, although you may find your quality of sleep is negatively affected.
Eating a lighter meal of lean protein before bedtime, or not eating at all, is a better choice. Natural insomnia aides such as Chamomile (anti-inflammatory, treats anxiety, insomnia & aids digestion), Melatonin (helps regulate sleep), & Lavender (fights insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, and depression) are all good alternatives to the rising prescription medication epidemic.
Maxx Synergy (full disclosure: my company) offers a product known as “Lights Off,” and when taken an hour before bedtime, helps calm, de-stress, and relax your core to help you get the deep and restorative sleep you need to function at your best. With 15 ingredients to allow your body to heal and detox, you’ll awaken with increased vitality but no groggy or sluggish feeling.
For those who want the instant gratification of something to help them get to sleep and stay asleep with long term positive health benefits, “Lights Off” is a great alternative. Other options for natural sleep aides can be found at the Frisco Family Health Market.

SIGHT

sheetsA great night’s sleep can also depend on the visual conditions in your bedroom environment.
Our body detects when the sun starts going down and the light in our environment diminishes. Melatonin levels begin to rise and our temperature drops. The result is less alertness and increased sleepiness.
Light and darkness affect the quality of our sleep. Even artificial light like TVs, tablets, smart phones, and porch lights matter.
How many of us stare into our smart phones just before trying to get to sleep? How about breaking open a physical book to “wind down” instead, and avoid electronics at least 15-30 minutes prior to bedtime.
Cover small lights, obtain light filtering window covers, and use eye masks to help diminish ambient light. For darkening shades or help blocking light form windows visit Gotcha Covered here in Frisco. Avoid turning on bright overhead lights when rising to use the restroom in the night, and use a smaller night light in the bathroom itself instead.
Reducing light exposure will help you get that 7-9 hours of sleep that’s recommended.

TOUCH

How well you sleep at night can also be affected by how you feel in your environment. The temperature recommended for best sleep is around 65 degrees. At night, your temperature tends to drop, being the lowest approximately 5am. If the room is too warm, this can inhibit your body’s drop and make for a restless night.
Each person is different, so experiment with what works best for you. Our own thermoregulation of temperature can cause sweating or shivering which will disturb sleep.
pillowsYour mattress, pillows, pajamas, and sheets can also affect sleep. It’s recommended to change out your  mattress about every 7 years. I know this seems a bit much, but for some it’s a must. We have numerous places in town where you can “try before you buy” that also have a money back guarantee. Mattress Firm North Friscooffers this option plus payment plans.
I cannot say enough about pillows because keeping your spine in alignment is the key. Consider replacing them when they feel lumpy or flat. In fact, I am still searching for my perfect pillow.
Proper sheets and pajamas can make sleeping a dream. Typically, a breathable cotton fabric is great so you don’t overheat. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 91% of Americans change their sheets at least every other week. Clean, fresh smelling sheets can make all the difference for a restful night. For those of you with pets (especially, the hairy ones) try Sticky Sheets, they are a life saver!

SOUND

When you work the night shift and have the lawn guys that come at 9am on Tuesday, sound is a big issue. Roadwork, dogs barking, alarms, a TV blaring from the other room, doors shutting… You name it, I’ve dealt with it.
While you sleep, your brain continues to process sound at a basic level. Sound can affect the different stages of sleep you are in without you even being aware of it. The types of sounds also make a difference. That’s why you may not wake to the routine noise of a spouse’s snores, but instantly arise when the baby cries across the house. People are more likely to wake when a sound is relevant or emotionally charged.
Going to sleep with the TV on can take a toll on your quality of sleep. The problem is that the sounds from the TV range in volume and tone disrupting your sleep subconsciously. White noise or a sound machine would be better. There are apps for your smartphone that put white noise right at your fingertips. Personally, we sleep with a fan going. The white noise plus circulating air help us take the plunge into deep slumber.
Take time to set your phone on “Do Not Disturb” so you don’t hear every ding and notification. Also, close the bedroom door and let others know when you plan to sleep.
Arrange yard work to an alternate day, place a sign on your front door, and put the yapping dogs in their space with blinds closed. Ear plugs are also a great option. I use my shooting range plugs, specially molded ear plugs, for comfort.

So, Stop Slapping the Snooze

Many of the things involving your senses are intentional steps that can be taken to increase your quality of sleep. We’ve all met people who say they slept 12 hours but still arose exhausted. Any of the things related to the senses could be the culprit, and most likely several of them.
Eliminating just one negative and replacing it with a positive can lead to a more comfortable, healthier sleep pattern over time. Your sleep won’t fix itself and prescription sleep medication need not be the only option.
It amazes me that when I was obese, I failed to consider nutrition, my own boundaries, or what my responsibilities were to getting better sleep. That special quick fix pill wasn’t out there. Research & do your own due diligence when it comes to your health and well being.

20 Quick Ways to Relieve Stress

20 Quick Ways to Relieve Stress

“The state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.”  Yep, we all recognize it, and for most of us, it’s a constant state of “being.”
When we’re stressed, hormones like cortisol produce what we call the “fight or flight response.” Our heart rate rises and our blood vessels restrict putting us in a state to escape that which we deem as a threat. When not kept in check, our stress response can lead to physical conditions like headaches, high blood pressure, or depression and anxiety disorders (among others).
On the positive side, we ALSO have a “relaxation response” which can be learned and here are 20 ways to do just that…
deep breathing

1. Deep Breathing

Yep, I know. That seems too easy. Medical research suggests that breathing exercises can help you reduce tension and boost oxygen, therefore helping to you calm down.
When I taught childbirth classes, this was one way to assist the mom-to-be to increase oxygen to her baby and naturally relax her body to make it through the contractions.
The power of deep breathing is under-utilized. Being aware of how shallowly and quickly we tend to breathe on a regular basis will allow you to use this technique more often.
So, take a few minutes each day and just sit quietly and breathe deeply… Slowly exhaling and allowing your blood pressure and heart rate to normalize. This activity alone can bring you back to a peaceful state and can be done anywhere (in a traffic jam, when tempers rise, when you stub your toe on the bed frame, etc.).

2. Take a Walk

Nature itself has an enormously calming effect on the body. Most walks can help you clear your head and boost endorphins which reduce stress hormones. We have numerous parks, walking trails, neighborhoods, and gyms to take advantage of in Frisco.

3. Visualization

A short visualization is an easy way to get back to your center. The National Institute of Health recognizes “guided imagery” as a way to elicit the relaxation response.
First, make yourself comfortable (at your desk, on the couch, wherever you can escape for 5 minutes). Try to picture a peaceful scene: a previous good experience you’ve had at the beach or in the mountains, accomplishing a future goal, or in an experience that brought you the feeling of joy.
BTW… we love the Headspace app.

4. Eat Something Good for You

In my experience, eating doesn’t HAVE to be bad. Although food can be an addiction, the right food on a regular basis is a healthy habit. Have healthy snacks that you enjoy readily available in your home, car, or locker at work. This way you’ll avoid the impulsive need to eat that extra large brownie left in the break room. Nothing is more stressful to the brain than thinking you’ve run out of nourishment.
bouquet of roses

5. Buy Yourself Flowers

YOU choose your own flowers to display on your desk, in your kitchen, at work… Wherever you’ll see them the most. You deserve them, so buy them for yourself. Pick those that make you feel abundant. Enjoy them and think positive thoughts. Even a simple houseplant offers air purification and can induce a relaxation response.

6. Breaks from the Computer

Make it a habit to take mini-breaks away from your laptop or desktop. Constant computer use is associated with increased stress, sleep issues, and even pain in wrists and arms due to the repetitive movements. Plus, you definitely need to shut it off at least 30 minutes prior to bedtime.

7. Kissing

According to WebMD, kissing helps your brain release endorphins and can relieve stress. If you go for it and kiss passionately, you might just burn 2 calories a minute! That’s more fun than the gym, for sure!

8. Turn Off the Cell Phone

Cell phones can be addictive. We don’t really want to admit it, but it’s true. Now that we can access literally anything via our phones… email, contacts, social media, games, the bank, Amazon, Netflix… It goes on and on, and sometimes there’s NO down time.
Be intentional about looking at your phone. Learn to set boundaries on how much you will use it (set alarms, turn off notifications), and make IT work for you in DECREASING stress. Check out a couple of apps you can use to increase your bliss:  CALM and SpiritJunkie

9. Play Some Music

Even though we know that classical music can decrease blood pressure and those annoying stress hormones, most ANY music you love can raise your “feel good” hormones like dopamine.
Studies show that turning UP the radio on the drive home, or listening to music while studying, can enhance well-being. Playing music in the operating room has even been shown to be beneficial for both doctors and patient.  So, putting in those headphones and singing to your favorite tunes can chill you out in no time.

10. Treat Yourself to a Sweet Treat (Just One!)

Yes, we remember #4 above, but sometimes, you just gotta give in.  The sweetness of chewing gum may help to freshen your breath, but it also can help relieve stress during a busy day.
Or, instead of raiding the vending machine at work, try ONE Hershey’s Kiss, a mint, or a mini Snicker’s bar to stimulate the brain.  Just don’t over do it. Did you know that Nothing Bundt Cakes here in Frisco will give you a FREE bundt cake on your birthday? It’s just ONE right?!?!

11. Laughter IS Great Medicine

Watch a viral funny video, comedy show/clip, or hang around someone who knows how to make you laugh. Laughter forces you to inhale more oxygen and ultimately leads to relaxation. Even the “anticipation” of something funny coming your way can do the trick!

12. Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Try it, you’ll like it. Take a short break from work and try one of the 5-20 minute relaxation techniques that involve tensing up muscle groups and mindfully releasing as you breathe let go.
Start with your toes and work your way up your body.  Feet, calves, quadriceps, abs, arms, shoulders, face/jaw… tighten all the muscles as much as you can then then relax them. It may seem silly, but this practice can help reduce anxiety and stress.

13. Talk To or Meet Up with a BFF

Most of use have that One friend… You know, the one who can make you feel better when the world is falling apart. Close friends can actually decrease the production of cortisol producing a relaxed feeling. Plan a date or a FaceTime chat to catch up!

14. Crocheting/Knitting (a calm craft of some kind)

Now, I know this may seem old fashioned, but really is stress relieving. The repetitive motions of making jewelry, latch-hook, sewing, and knitting can soothe anxiety. My mom makes beanie hats for the local baby nursery and some people make crafts with or for nursing home patients. So, you’re relieving your stress and giving to others as well.
yoga

15.  Light Yoga

Yoga poses along with mindful breathing are excellent ways to decrease stress. Yoga, over time, will help strengthen your core muscle groups and increase overall flexibility. We have several options here in Frisco: Yoga on Main Street, Hot Body Yoga, Frisco Yoga & Nutrition, Yoga4Yu, and SunstoneFIT

16. Spend Time In a Religious/Spiritual Community

Being a part of a greater group with purpose can create a sense of  peace, and one of the major reasons people practice religion is for stress relief. Plus, you can find a way to serve as one of the major stress-relievers is just “getting your eyes off yourself.”

17. Hang Out With Your Pet

Without a doubt, pet-owners are less stressed out. Animals tend to love unconditionally. Even when you have a bad day, they’re in your face trying to make it better. And puppies are the BEST… their smells, their wiggles, their unstoppable licks.  I mean who could resist a little stress relief playing with an adorable fur baby, or watching a kitten act crazy. Even if you don’t have a dog, just visiting a dog park is a blast. I even watched a hilarious video recently that  shows a dog “Just Chillin’ in the Pool.”

18. Create an Art Project

Now this is a fun one! Whether “Painting with a Twist” or “Sip ‘N Doodle,” it’s wine with a palette purpose! That’s what I call stress relief. Other forms of creativity can be found on Pinterest (another potential addiction, so be careful) and finger-painting with the kids or grandkids. Make it fun by doing it somewhere BESIDES where you will be stressed at the mess.

19. Write It Out

Journaling may be one way to effectively relieve stress-related symptoms due to its meditative and reflective effects. Just sit down and write… whatever comes to mind.
A perfect way to express your feelings privately and appropriately (sometimes shredding or burning evidence might be in line), you’ll find that journaling is really helpful in times of grief or when you’re wanting some creativity to come to light.
I keep journals of positive things I have learned, inspirational and motivating information, funnies, and things I plan to pass down to my kids. My mom created a “Grandy” journal that described my step-dad’s life as he went through his Alzheimers journey.
I have a friend who blogs about family and all the happenings, so the kids will have accurate and awesome memories of family times in the future. You can find journals at specialty shops or bookstores. Even a plain piece of paper works for me.  Especially when it comes to venting, then tearing it up into pieces works wonders for stress relief.

20. Spark Some Scents

Certain aromas are naturally conducive to stress relief. Lavender, Frankincense, Rose, and Chamomile are among the top scents for relaxation. Whether through a diffuser, spray, incense stick, or candle, incorporating soothing smells will de-stress your environment.
Of course, one of the quickest ways to health is to eliminate your stress altogether, but we all know that’s not practical. With the stressors and triggers of work, family, extracurricular activities, couple time, and other commitments, we ALL need to look for the relaxers that work for us. Hopefully, you can use some of the ideas above and comment below if you have others as well.

Antioxidants

What are antioxidants and why is everyone talking about them?
The world we live in today has so many toxins, from food preservatives to chemical air pollution. Of course, since these are relatively new to the earth, our bodies haven’t evolved to deal with these. So, the cells in our body oxidize, and lose an electron. These same cells then try to steal an electron from a healthy cell, much like the Pac-man video game would gobble up dots. Antioxidants offer these “hungry” cells an additional electron, so it doesn’t have to steal one! Living in today’s toxin-rich environment means we should make it a priority to consume antioxidants.

Fortunately, DynaMAXX’s Lights ON & Lights OFF products are a significant source of a variety of antioxidants. I recommend the use of both products, daily.

Success Happens

I will never forget the day I went to a large event, I was in a different company at the time. I met Dr. Tom Barrett, and it was a day that ultimately changed my life forever. Now, I’m not sitting here at the ‘top’ of any company, an expert by no means…but I have had the privilege of growing into who I am today, so I can lead like a ‘Rockstar‘. Some of us take more time than others to ‘get it’ and learn to earn…the hard way. I would be ‘one of those’ :)
That day, I walked up to Mr. Barrett to get his book signed “Success Happens”. The last member of my ‘team’ had quit and left me attending this event alone (five hours from home). A team of one. Dismayed & not sure what to say, I shared my story and this is what he wrote in my book…Valoree-You are MY hero! Dream, Focus and Win..signed Tom Barrett.

Really? All I remember is thinking, “WOW, he believes in me.”
Today, I see other people believing in me…but the main one is ME, I believe in me. Now that is powerful.
Yesterday a similar situation occurred. My direct upline quit…you know that dirty four letter word.  I HAVE learned that people quit. LOL.  They say they won’t, but they do. More than most of us want to admit as individuals, teams and company’s. I have committed two years in my current company. I love the products, people, education, encouragement, recognition…I could go on and on.
Tenacity.
Committment.
Fun.
Growth (in other ways besides numbers).
Healthly Lifestyle
All of these come to mind. My WHY is strong and I am seeing my dreams come to fruition. MY dreams, not somebody elses. One thing I have learned over the past few years is you have to do things that are best for you. If you do not take care of yourself, you cannot be there for those whom you want to help.  We all have to make decisions and the only one that can make the best ones for you, IS YOU. You are the one that will have to live with them.
I wish my friend the best and understand she is making decisions for herself and the best for her family. She brought me into this business of network marketing over 8 years ago. My life would not have been the same otherwise and I am thankful for her. It does make me sad, not to be directly working with her in ‘my’ company of heart, Dynamaxx, but we will remain friends and work together in other endeavors. Two people, two different life goals…that’s all it means. Rock on my friend.  XOXO
